Peace Dijah house of tea family! happy tea thyme tuesday!! Today tea topic I think you will enjoy! I know you like dijah what is the collation between tea and slavery! We will be discussing the history of tea houses in the african american community how slaves turned tea in profitable business. WE just learned this information about tea houses in the african community here at dijah house of tea we're always researching tea and tea history to bring you the best informative blogs! Well my beautiful tea drinkers let's steep into the tea topic!


Tea house has been apart of african american culture since the 18th century when it first arise during slavery. Let's take a steep back! February 15 marks the summit of the black community by giving and community.

Valentine's Day slave masters in New Orleans would have parties and sometimes slaves were given leftovers and broken China.

The day would mean that the slaves would have lighter work loads that's when the slaves initiated a tradition around their day of rest!


During the 18th century tea Ceremonies were created during the final decades before emancipation. Women would take the tea cup and give it to the man of the house would walk around where all the slaves lived and offer a teacup to them to signal and let them know that his house of household would be offering tea ceremony event.


During the 1930's and 1940's affluent blacks became entrepreneurs by opening tea houses and offering safe places for community members to host events.

Tea house owners offer exclusive services and tend to those in higher social classes than the average restaurant owner.


Tea house owner hosted groups like the NAACP, Women's Auxiliary, Blacks Sports writers, Politicians and Civil Right leaders.

Tea houses have always played an important role in our community! from safe spaces to express ourselves to supporting our most affluent black leaders!
